With 2006 coming to a close, it’s time to look ahead to what the new year will bring. Prognosticators the world over are putting forth their predictions, and it looks to be a great year in the field of interior design!
Color
Blues, greens and oranges will be highlighted in the coming year, according to The Color Association. Think of the fashions you’ve seen over the past couple of seasons… it always takes a little longer for the interior design market to catch up, since items for the home are less transient than what you hang in your closet. Slate blue and chocolate brown have been a growing trend, and it looks like that will continue. The latest trends in these colors evoke the peacock, with its brilliant teal plummage, shimmery blues and deep shiny greens.
Atmosphere
It’s all about individuality and personal style. With recent natural disasters and the war in Iraq, many people are wanting to come home to a warm environment that envelops them in comfort. Garden rooms are increasing in popularity. Outdoor kitchens are HUGE these days. Have you noticed the outdoor lamps and rugs that are so abundant? This trend plays off the color trend of bringing the outdoors in, but flipping it on its head.
Color plays a huge part in creating an environment, as does light. These two elements are being combined in all sorts of products for the home. A flat screen television emits light onto the wall behind it that corresponds with the color being displayed on the screen. Homedics has a new product called the Color Cube that the owner can use to provide atmosphere. LEDs are being incorporated into all kinds of things, from clothes to wallpaper.
Building
Green or sustainable design has been a growing theme (no pun intended!) over the past few years. Renewable resources, made with natural materials using processes that don’t hurt the environment, continue to be a priority among builders and architects. You’ve heard the term “cradle to grave”? These days the term is “cradle to cradle“, wherein a product’s lifecycle is planned out from inception to obsolesence so that each stage leads naturally to the next with the culmination in recycling it back to its origins.
Luxury
The next luxury item for the home: elevators! With the middle class able to afford such things as vessel sinks and travertine floors, the wealthy have to keep upping the ante! His and her bathrooms in the master suite are catching on quickly, as is the “Jack and Jill” bathroom shared by two bedrooms. And of course, design itself is coming into the mainstream, with HGTV, magazines and the internet encouraging people of any income level to think about how they want their environment to feel.

How funny — I was talking to someone recently who said that she wanted an outdoor kitchen. I had to ask her exactly what that was. I guess I’m a little out-of-touch on today’s interior (or, should I say exterior?) design trends.

Wow, thanks for the information. I could have never predicted *any* of those things for 2007, so it just shows what I know about interior design!
What do you see yourself doing with your own interior design decisions in 2007?

Hi Wendy-
Great insight into the future and I hope you’re right! We have a lot of people visiting our website wanting to incorporate very personal elements of themselves into their designs. We work with them to incorporate their names, favorite quotes, drawings and other funky favorites into custom furniture they will have forever and will pass down to their children through the generations. It’s a way to add richness and meaning to their environments.
Thanks for your great column. Best regards,
Peggy Farabaugh
