There are so many design-related magazines on the market, it’s hard to navigate through the clutter and find the gems. One of the magazines I read consistently is Domino. It hasn’t been on the market for very long, but it has captured the heart of many a reader. Here are three reasons that I read every issue:
1. Stickers!
This sounds silly, of course. I’m not in third grade anymore. But I do love those stickers they provide toward the front of each issue. They have 5 or 6 stickers in a number of categories (i.e., furniture, fashion). I don’t necessarily use them categorically, preferring to grab the next one and slap it down regardless of its “purpose”. But when I’m done reading, I have bookmarks for every item that interested me so I can easily return later.
2. Scouting
This section toward the beginning of each issue is chock full of ideas and finds. Each page is a montage of items culled from various sources, each following a theme of sorts. It could be a particular writer’s list of favs, or gift ideas, or maybe even be a color-themed page where all the items are red. Quick to digest and easy to find (they list the price and source right there!), they are a magazine junky’s dream!
3. Fun and funky ideas
Of course, the true test of any publication is whether they provide good content. (So, how am I doing guys? - wink, wink!) Domino’s design sensibility definitely isn’t static. They tend to promote more contemporary ideas and items, but a person of any taste could incorporate their ideas in their own space. I once saw a lucite chair done in an antique style in one of their spreads. Talk about old meets new! The whole magazine is dedicated to helping the hip and the hopeless find their style.
If you haven’t picked up a copy, drop by Domino’s website to check it out.
